Earlier this year (2007), The Tangent blessed the world of prog rock with one of the finest DVD/CD packages I have ever seen or heard. In short, the Going Of On One 2CD/DVD package is nothing short of spectacular. The warning was there: this is a special edition limited to 3000 copies. The message was: the early bird gets the prize, the procrastinator gets the schwanz. The truth of that can be seen by the spiralling prices for this package just six months after release!
Truly, there is nothing to dislike about this box set. The complaint of one reviewer that this has poor sound is hogwash. The problem must be with his sound system. First of all, I was floored by the quality and entertainment value of the DVD. Seeing The Tangent in concert made me appreciate their music all that much more. My favorites there are GPS Culture, The Winning Game, In Earnest, and Lost In London. There is also a worthwhile DVD extra featuring a band that Andy Tillison once did some writing for and footage of that band playing songs now played by the Tangent. Yeah, you can get the package with just the DVD but knowing how much more you get when you buy this set makes getting this the smart choice.
Here’s what you get with the CDs: Everything that is on the DVD plus four bonus tracks the best of which are The World We Drive Through and an excellent cover of King Crimson’s 21st Century Schizoid Man. Both CDs are well over an hour long each and the DVD is probably close to ninety minutes long. In addition, this package contains an attractive booklet filled with pictures, artwork, and pertinent information about the band and this set.
If you are a fan of innovative progressive rock, you will find that The Tangent epitomizes its modern spirit. Get this while you can. I saw it for a decent price today on InsideOut’s German website, but man am I glad that I bought it here when the price was even better. Don’t procrastinate any longer, get this prog classic NOW!
