Unbidden images of Gone With the Wind popped into my head and played out when I first started reading the stories of Aibileen and the other black maids, until I discovered that some of those same maids were college educated and reading classics like To Kill a Mockingbird and even some Freud. I had to stop and think, this story is in fact based in 1962, almost a hundred years since the slaves were set free. So what has happened in 100 years? According to this story, subservient slave labor is alive and well, except that these black women are employees instead of property.

The book spans the time from 1962-1964 in Jackson, Mississippi, the civil rights movement is rumbling. Almost everything is still segregated, except for the bus, “We sit anywhere we want to now thanks to Miss Parks.” In the background of the story, Mississippi is featured in Life magazine twice in two months for its racial unrest, Martin Luther King is planning his big march on Washington, and President Kennedy is shot. But in the foreground are the black maids and their stories, the everyday life of these women is fascinating reading, the things they had to endure, the joys and hardships. You can tell yourself this is a fiction book, but you know deep down that these things really did happen, a sad and shameful time in our Southern history.

I really enjoyed this book, it is funny and sad and serious and suspenseful and totally believable. As I am sure the author intended, I found myself rooting for the maids and abhorring their white bosses. For such an oppressing topic, it was a thoroughly great read.

Artemis Fowl, by Eoin Colfer is a definite must read fantasy that I would recommend to kids ages 10 and up. The story starts off in Ho Chi Minh City. Artemis Fowl and his bodyguard, Butler, are meeting a man who supposedly is going to take them to see a fairy. They meet a fairy who has lost all her magic due rice wine. Artemis tricks her and gets The Book in exchange for her life. The Book is a special book that holds all the fairy’s secrets including how they get their magic. At the same time Captain Holly Short a LEPrecon (Lower Elements Police) officer, is on a special mission to defend the humans from a deadly troll. Although what she doesn’t know is that she is about to be captured by… Artemis Fowl!
Artemis Fowl is unlike any other any other twelve year old boy. He is completely ghost pale with dark hair. The sinister look in his eye is enough to send shivers down the toughest man’s spines. He’s determined to become a master thief and carry on the Fowl legacy. Artemis is an ultimate genius and is always one step ahead. He’s quick on improvising and very daring. He also feels as well as acts superior, therefore he doesn’t treat most people with respect. The only friend he has is his bodyguard, Butler. Artemis speaks with an incredible adult-sounding vocabulary, and doesn’t show many feelings, except for the times that he is torn because his mother is losing her mind ever since his father mysteriously disappeared. As you can tell, Artemis Fowl is absolutely no ordinary twelve year old boy.
Artemis Fowl is about to put his knowledge to the test as he takes on the fairies in a fast-paced marvelous read that will keep you reading to the end, and then have you begging for more of Artemis Fowl!

My Kindle developed a problem (text-speech) after 6 months of heavy use. Amazon replaced it within the week, with very little fuss or bother. They talked me through replacing all my documents and after about 2 hours worth of work my new Kindle had all my books, PDF’s and documents.

This was a great book! I could not put it down, and is one of the best books I have read in a very long time! Kathryn Stockett was right on target with the language, era, facts and social events of the time. Wonderful read!!

My nightly ritual of falling asleep with a book was interrupted by this page-turner. Cruel and compelling, life as described on this depression-era circus train was certainly an eye opener for those of us baby boomers untouched by such deprivations. I would recommend this to anyone.

The Apple iPod 3rd gen is a blast to use. It offers many options for the user, and is much more than just a PMP. Apple’s App Store offers countless applications with a variety of different uses. The battery life lasts about 25-30 hours while just playing music, and if you play music and do other things on it, the battery life drops drastically. I don’t suggest using the built in speaker, because it is of very low quality unfortunately. Depending on what headphones you use, the music can sound fantastic or abysmal. The stock headphones that come with the unit are not very good at all IMO. Other than that though, it is a fantastic piece of hardware. Actually another problem that I have is it requires you to use iTunes. Don’t get me wrong, it definitely has it pluses, but iTunes has more negatives than anything. Hope this helps.

Before getting a Garmin, my previous way of tracking runs was to use a Polar 6 heart rate monitor (to track calories burned and also get a sense of how hard I was working) and use the RunKeeper app on my iPhone, which I always take with me on runs (for the music.) I thought this was a “good enough” system because the Garmin was just way out of my price range. Well, then Amazon had this huge sale on the 305 and I’d gotten some money for the holidays, so I decided to give it a shot.

Here’s what I love:
-the accuracy of the mapping
-being able to see on a clear display my exact pace, heart rate, distance and time spent running (kind of hard to do that with an app when you wear your iPhone in an armband.

Here’s what keeps me from throwing a parade in the Garmin 305’s honor:
-it’s clunky
-the calories burned part is just based on your weight and distance, not your heart rate (even though it will DISPLAY your heart rate) which can’t be as accurate as the Polar monitor. The fact is, I was the same weight six months ago and ran the same distance, but I burned a lot more calories then because I wasn’t as seasoned a runner; the more you do something, the easier it becomes and the fewer calories you burn, so the idea that I could burn 350 calories for a 3 mile run (my Polar 6 would show me burning 250-275 for the same distance) without sprinting the whole way seems off to me.
-I don’t find it that easy to use. I needed to have a few friends show me the basics. But I’m not that tech savvy. Still, in an age of touch-screen everything, this technology feels very DOS-like to me.

I still am thrilled that I purchased this! And I bring it on every run.

I bought this product today because I was going crazy trying to clean vomit off of our carpeted stairs. (I know, it’s disgusting.) I was having a lot of problems getting any cleaning solution to do the job. I was a little skeptical that this machine could get out the odor and clean up the discoloration; but it really worked and I was very impressed. Like most of the reviewers, I feel that you absolutely need to read the manual before using it. It needs so much more care than a regular vacuum cleaner. But, the set up was a breeze and the instructions are very easy to follow. After seeing the results, I want to use it to clean the entire house!! The hardest part will be getting my husband to move the furniture!
